Background Story
Ryland Grace was a molecular biology researcher before becoming a middle-school science teacher. The Hail Mary spacecraft carries Grace near Tau Ceti to investigate its unusual status amid the dimming of other stars. Astrophage is a fictional microorganism that absorbs and stores immense energy, linking stellar dimming with the mission's progress. Rocky is an engineer from an Eridian civilization who builds a friendship with Grace across differences in language and environment. Eva Stratt coordinates Project Hail Mary on Earth and brings Grace into its scientific research.
